From Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart to Céline. 26th April 1889

Jesus!

Darling Céline,

I’ve come to wish you a happy twentieth birthday! Yet it is so obscured by tears! Or should I say so bright, radiant, and full of hope… Oh yes! if there are nothing but thorns on this earth for you, roses are flowering in heaven… They are blooming over and over again beyond the azure vault. But Jesus hides all these treasures from us, he hides [1v°] our wealth from us so as to multiply them. Little sister exile will pass away! But heaven never! For a moment of suffering, there’ll be an eternity of happiness and with each new suffering a new eternity. Let us think on this and take advantage of our trial. It’s a select grace, a grace to be received as an honour, and the most certain proof of Jesus’ love for us. He invites us to carry the cross with Him and it is certainly not yet as heavy [2 r°] as his own.

When will you give us news of our dear father? I’m hungry for it.

Take heart my darling Célin1! Remember this verse from the psalms: “He that goes forth weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him (Ps. 125:6).” Ah! In the wake of your life, what marvelous sheaves you shall bring from this past year!

Farewell darling little sister, I love you very tenderly and this trial draws our [2 v°] hearts even closer together. We suffer the same sorrow, and live the same life as we wait for heaven!

The little iron bed is not quick in coming (a bed from Les Buissonnets to be given to the Carmel).

[2 v° tv] I will take Communion for you on Sunday. How can we possibly press Jesus crucified against our chests without being pricked by the nails and thorns that pierce him?
