Jesus!
Darling Céline,
I have come to wish you a happy twenty-second birthday! This age brings back sweet memories. I was twenty-two years old when I met the Father for the first time (Fr. Pichon, in Lisieux, on 17th April 1882)… At twenty-two, despite the enormous hole left by our darling Mother’s death, life still smiled upon us. Now it [1 v°] does so only on the side of heaven. But let’s not forget that this is the only side that is true, desirable, and made uniquely to satisfy our souls. There are no more illusions for us; the appealing veil, which covers the things of here below with a deceiving outward appearance and misleads poor humans, has fallen away. Ah! darling little sister, when I see you, at twenty-two years of age, renounce in your heart all that can make life happy for others, I wonder [2 r°] what divine light enlightens you to the world’s nothingness like this, if not the knowledge of the cross. How great is the love of He who has put you through the crucible of suffering to enrich your soul like a precious and most dear pearl…

Farewell little sister, life will go by fast… It will not always be the time for labour and tears. The day of harvest and eternal feasting will come!...

Your sister who cherishes you
Marie of the S. Heart
