Dear little Céline,

We won’t be able to go and fetch the compost until the middle of next week. I prefer telling you this in case it can’t be arranged. Do thank Uncle. And you, my petit Célin1, can be sure of all your little sister’s affection, for she is very grateful to you. You are doing everything you can to please me. If only you knew how touched I am. The rhododendron is very beautiful: it’s the last one this time, I assure you.

I’m sending you a little sachet from Mother Geneviève; don’t go showing it to everyone.

The scoters were very nice; they reminded me of our poor father (Mr. Martin had enjoyed giving these sea-birds, which were considered a source of lean meat, to the Carmelites).
