For Céline

Darling little daughter

I find the two paintbrushes so much to my taste that I would quite like to keep them. It was the little one I asked for but I like the big one very much and it grieves me to send it back to your shopkeeper. You don’t mind giving them to me, do you? Thank you, little darling, I love you and don’t need a [v°] paintbrush to draw your picture in my heart.

Farewell, my beloved little daughter, I’m thinking of you, I ask God to make you as good as you desire, ask the same thing for me.

Mother Marie de Gonzague sends her love. She finds it’s quite forward of me to keep the two paintbrushes, but I know who I’m dealing with.

Will you give me your two little cheeks so that I can plant my kisses on them?
